I have a confession to make. Over the past year or so I have become slightly very addicted to Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap. I joined Grove Collaborative, and once I saw all the yummy scents you can’t find in most brick & mortar stores, I was hooked. It became my monthly splurge to order a few new scents.

We have used dripline in our garden boxes since be bought our first house over 15 years ago. We love them for a multitude of reasons, which I will go into in more detail below. I hope this How to Install Dripline in Your Garden Boxes tutorial will encourage you to get started on yours today!

What is a dripline?

A dripline, also known as a drip irrigation system, consists of tiny holes inserted along a hose which allow small amounts of water to drip slowly into the soil.

What Are the Perks of Watering with Dripline vs. Overhead Sprinklers?

  • Dripline can be focused solely at the roots of the plant which is important for plants with large leaves that may block water from an overhead sprinkler
  • Plants watered with dripline are less susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew that occur with wet leaves
  • Dripline saves water. Overhead watering is wasteful because as much as 30% of the water evaporates before it reaches the plant’s roots
  • Water anytime of day without worrying about disease problems since the leaves won’t get wet
  • You can add sprayers to your dripline for plants whose roots spread throughout the garden box, such as strawberries
  • Improves growth because smaller amounts of water delivered over a longer period of time provide optimal growing conditions
  • Minimizes weeds because you are only watering where it’s needed

I have been making this simple homemade granola for over ten years! It’s my favorite because it’s easy to make, has all-natural ingredients, and can be customized to fit your family’s preference.

In the winter, I eat mainly oatmeal for breakfast. But once the weather warms up, I start whipping up smoothies and granola! My personal favorite way to eat this simple homemade granola is in a bowl topped with milk and fresh blueberries — homegrown or handpicked from the farm. It’s also wonderful sprinkled on top of yogurt or even as a snack on its own.

This easy vegan protein smoothie is delicious and versatile. It contains only a handful of different ingredients and delivers a punch of antioxidants, protein, folic acid, calcium and potassium to start your day off right.

If I’m being honest, my husband used to be the smoothie maker in our family. He made them for me a few mornings a week so I could drink them on the way to work. I finally decided I should learn to make smoothies for myself since I was drinking them so often! I have tweaked my husband’s “recipe”, removing the vanilla and scoop of orange juice concentrate. I switched out cow’s milk for almond milk and whey powder for organic plant-based protein powder. What remains is a basic vegan smoothie recipe that tastes so great that I can drink it over and over again! However, if you do want to change things up, it’s easy to add different types of berries or fruit.

Blueberry bush raspberry plant homestead garden how to grow

When my husband and I began planning our little homestead, the first thing I knew we needed ASAP were some garden boxes and a row of blueberries and raspberries. One of our goals with our little homestead is to be more self-reliant. Current world circumstances have proved that we can’t always rely on grocery stores to have all the food we need. We also can’t control what stores will charge us when demand is high and supply is low. Nothing would be better than being able to eat fresh berries all summer without paying a dime! You can grow berries in almost any size yard, and I’ll show you how to get started.
