This easy vegan protein smoothie is delicious and versatile. It contains only a handful of different ingredients and delivers a punch of antioxidants, protein, folic acid, calcium and potassium to start your day off right.

If I’m being honest, my husband used to be the smoothie maker in our family. He made them for me a few mornings a week so I could drink them on the way to work. I finally decided I should learn to make smoothies for myself since I was drinking them so often! I have tweaked my husband’s “recipe”, removing the vanilla and scoop of orange juice concentrate. I switched out cow’s milk for almond milk and whey powder for organic plant-based protein powder. What remains is a basic vegan smoothie recipe that tastes so great that I can drink it over and over again! However, if you do want to change things up, it’s easy to add different types of berries or fruit.

Do You Have to Add Protein Powder to Your Smoothie?

No, you do not have to add the protein powder. I chose to add protein powder for a couple of reasons. First, I noticed that I was getting hungry just an hour after drinking my morning smoothie. I needed to add some protein to keep me full at least for a couple of hours until I had time for a morning snack.

I tried making the easy vegan protein smoothie without the protein powder, which not only caused me to get hungry more quickly, but took away some of the flavor. I may experiment in the future with using other types of vegan protein, but for now I will keep using the protein powder.

Tips for Making Easy Vegan Protein Smoothies

  1. Use a good blender so you can drink your greens instead of chew them! Before I had my trusty Blendtec high-powered blender, I was using an inexpensive blender that didn’t do a thorough chopping job. It left little pieces of spinach and chunks of frozen fruit throughout my smoothie. Let’s just say it wasn’t very palatable. We finally splurged and bought my Blendtec which has been a game changer.
  2. DO NOT leave out the spinach! Spinach actually adds some sweetness to the smoothie. You won’t even notice it’s there because the berries keep the smoothie from turning green.
  3. Even with a high-powered blender, I usually run the smoothie cycle two times to ensure there are no chunks
  4. If the ingredients get “stuck” while blending, you may need to add more milk and use a spatula to push ingredients down towards the blade.
  5. Remember: Never remove the blender lid or insert a spatula while the blender is running!
  6. You can save on clean up time by rinsing the blender and lid with hot water right after use. One way to do this is by adding a cup of water and a drop of liquid dish soap to the blender and then running the blender through a cycle. Then rinse with clean water.

Easy Vegan Protein Smoothie Recipe

You will need:

1 1/2 cups vanilla or plain almond milk, preferably chilled

1 medium ripe banana

4-5 frozen strawberries

1 cup frozen blueberries

1 1/2 cups fresh spinach

1 heaping scoop vanilla organic vegan protein powder

Easy Vegan Protein Smoothie Instructions

  1. Pour almond milk into blender jar.
  2. Peel banana and add to blender.
  3. Add strawberries and blueberries to blender.
  4. Pour protein powder on top of berries.
  5. Layer spinach on top.
  6. Place lid on blender jar.
  7. Blend until smooth.

Variations on Easy Vegan Protein Smoothies

  1. If you choose to omit the protein powder, try using a small handful of raw nuts to add in some protein, such as cashews or almonds.
  2. To increase the sweetness, add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup.
  3. Substitute fresh kale for the spinach. To use kale, cut the leaves from the spine and discard the spine. Kale is more bitter than spinach, so your smoothie may require a bit of sweetener (see above).
  4. If I have fresh blueberries or strawberries that need to be used, I will use those in place of the frozen berries. When doing this, either add a couple of ice cubes or substitute frozen banana slices so your smoothie will still turn out cold and refreshing.
