Inspired by the summer collection of Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap, this DIY liquid hand soap tutorial will show you how to make your own hand soap in summer garden scents.
I have a confession to make. Over the past year or so I have become slightly very addicted to Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap. I joined Grove Collaborative, and once I saw all the yummy scents you can’t find in most brick & mortar stores, I was hooked. It became my monthly splurge to order a few new scents.
Why should you make DIY hand soap?
The main reason I joined Grove was to have access to more naturally made products. I have found some favorites for sure! But as I have been focusing on natural living and homesteading, I’ve realized it’s important to me to make more things myself. There are a few reasons why:
Know what’s in your product
When you make your own soap, laundry detergent, dish soap, hand sanitizer, etc. you know exactly what ingredients are being used. You can ensure your family is using all-natural products
Spend less, save more
Making your own products almost always saves you money, especially when the product, such as this DIY hand soap, only contains a few ingredients.
Be less dependent on market availability
When COVID-19 hit the U.S., all of a sudden you couldn’t find certain products in stores. Hand sanitizer was a big one to disappear off store shelves. Even on Grove, hand sanitizer has been in and out of stock and they have set limits on how much Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap you can buy. If you are used to making your own soap and other products, you will likely have ingredients on hand that can last you awhile in case there happens to be a shortage. A lot of the ingredients used in homemade products are not things that will disappear off store shelves either. Unless washing soda becomes the cure for coronavirus 😉

The above picture shows a few of the summer garden scents available from Mrs. Meyer’s: radish, basil and mint. The amazing thing about making your own DIY liquid hand soap is that you can choose any summer garden scents you want! I have made several different scents, including mint, basil and rosemary. I highly recommend the rosemary by the way! Other summer garden scents that would be fun to try include geranium, grapefruit, oregano, sage, marjoram, thyme, jasmine, and a lemon/lime combo.

DIY Liquid Hand Soap Recipe: Summer Garden Scents
Inspired by the summer collection of Mrs. Meyer's hand soap, this DIY liquid hand soap tutorial will show you how to make your own hand soap in summer garden scents.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup distilled or boiled water
- 1 1/4 cup Dr. Bronner's Unscented Castille Soap
- 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin
- 10-12 drops essential oil of choice
Instructions
- If you do not have distilled water, you will need to boil your water long enough to kill any potential bacteria. Let water cool completely.
- Pour distilled water into a liquid hand soap dispenser. Adding the water first will eliminate foaming.
- Next, pour castille soap into liquid hand soap dispenser.
- Then, add vegetable glycerin to dispenser.
- Finally, add essential oils to dispenser.
- Screw lid onto soap dispenser & give jar a good shake to mix ingredients.
Notes
1. Vegetable glycerin has the property of attracting water to itself, leaving your skin with an overall moisturizing and smoothing effect.
2. The amount of essential oils you add will depend on how potent it is and how strong of a scent you enjoy. For basil and rosemary, 10 drops was plenty while mint was great with 12 drops.
