smoothie bowl with toppings and spoon

My version of the chocolate cherry smoothie bowl actually got its start as a smoothie. I thought a chocolate covered cherry smoothie would be a wonderful addition to my FREE Kefir Smoothie Ebook. It turned out to be my favorite of the 5 recipes!

But I know sometimes it’s fun to eat a smoothie instead of sip it. Plus, with smoothie bowls you get to add fun toppings because they won’t get clogged in a straw or sink straight to the bottom of the cup.

The thick and creamy mix of frozen cherries, high quality cacao powder, whole milk yogurt, honey and vanilla hint of your favorite chocolate covered cherries you can’t stay away from on Valentine’s day. However, this is full of healthy ingredients so you can enjoy it for breakfast every morning and no one will judge.

Tips for Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Bowl:

  • Make sure to blend the honey with the yogurt, cocoa powder and vanilla before you add the frozen cherries. The temperature of the cherries will cause the honey to solidify and it will be clumpy if you don’t mix it in first.
  • You want the end product to be thick enough to eat with a spoon. In order to blend your ingredients to a thick consistency, you will need a high powered blender or food processor so that you don’t have to add additional liquid.
  • If the chocolate cherry smoothie mix is too runny, add ¼ cup more cherries. If it’s too thick to blend, add ¼ cup more yogurt. Just keep in mind it’s going to begin melting as you’re eating so don’t add more yogurt unless absolutely necessary.
  • If you use plain yogurt, you may need to add additional honey or pure maple syrup until sweetened to your taste.

FAQ:

What is the best liquid for a smoothie bowl?

I prefer to use yogurt as my “liquid” because it contains protein and gut healthy probiotics. Yogurt can also help create a thicker consistency than using milk which is what you’re aiming for in a smoothie bowl.

Are smoothie bowls healthy?

Smoothie bowls are so flexible that you can really make them as healthy as you want. I love this chocolate cherry smoothie bowl because it contains probiotics from the yogurt; fiber, antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium from the cherries; iron, zinc, antioxidants, and magnesium from the cacao powder, and antioxidants from the honey. You can also add iron rich greens like spinach or kale, extra protein with nut butters or protein powder, and use a variety of fruit to maximize several different vitamins. Read this article for more information on the health benefits of smoothie bowls.

What makes a smoothie bowl thick?

The thickness of a smoothie bowl is mostly attributed to the frozen fruit. Using thick yogurt instead of milk in your smoothie mixture will also help keep the consistency thicker than a drinkable smoothie.

Does fruit have to be frozen for a smoothie bowl?

If using fresh fruit instead of frozen, it is possible to make a smoothie bowl using ice cubes to thicken the mixture. The drawback to using ice is that the flavor of the smoothie bowl won’t be as rich.

What’s the difference between a smoothie bowl and an acai bowl?

An acai bowl is different from a smoothie bowl as it features acai berry puree. Aside from the acai puree it contains, the acai bowl is very similar to a smoothie bowl because it also includes frozen fruit, yogurt, and toppings.
